Grenada – A unusual jewel in the Caribbean

Ah, Grenada, what a great country! This is a location we understood bit to nothing about before choosing to step right here to pet-sit for 7 months, which [turned out to be] one of the very best decisions we’ve ever made. We understood a bit bit about the Caribbean, however the countries that pertained to mind were St. Lucia, Barbados, the Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos as well as the Dominican Republic.

We hadn’t even heard about the flavor Isle of Grenada up until reading a fellow traveller’s blog. It’s one of those locations that isn’t frequently seen on travel brochures, as well as is just far sufficient away to prevent mass tourism.

The Caribbean is generally understood for its elegant accommodation, blindingly white sands as well as best waters for sailing. Unfortunately, because of the popularity of the area, as well as simplicity of gain access to from North America, lots of of the islands in this sensational string of countries have ended up being over-developed as well as over-priced.

…except for Grenada!

Located in the extremely southern reaches of the lower Antilles, just 140 kms north of Venezuela, this is a country that has slipped between the tourism cracks. You’ll have to get right here soon to take pleasure in the natural appeal as well as authentic feel before everybody starts realizing what a jewel Grenada genuinely is.

Utendørs

Many of the island nations in the Caribbean are flat as well as sandy. Grenada is special in that it’s volcanic, mountainous and sandy! This makes for some refreshing waterfalls as well as incredible views when hiking as well as trekking.

There are a lot more tracks as well as hikes than I might even begin to tell you about. Living right here has provided us insight to lots of of the off-the-beaten-path treks that even a few of the locals don’t understand about. The jagged shoreline, many bays as well as thick jungle produce some fascinating walks.

When going on an all-inclusive holiday somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean, it’s nearly guaranteed that the beach will be packed with people. right here in Grenada, the most popular, 3km long, Grand Anse beach is essentially empty in comparison, even during the height season. The busiest we’ve seen it was during mid-late August when lots of of the regional Grenadians who online abroad came back to their house country to partake in Carnival.

Apparently there are around 45 different beaches on the island! three of which are the most prominent with tourists, while a lot of of the other 42 are peaceful as well as best for a walk, swim or a picnic.

We like being able to select which beach we feel like checking out – White sand, or black? hectic with beach bars, or peaceful with nobody around? Calm waters, or wavy? A beach with sunset, or sunrise? A beach on our doorstep, or one we have to drive to?

There are so lots of incredible beaches in Grenada, it has every type of beach we might potentially ask for.

The Authenticity

Grenada is one of those countries that’s not putting on a show. It’s rugged, unpretentious as well as naturally breathtaking without having to try.

The people right here aren’t jaded by tourism, instead, they’re inquisitive as well as real. You’ll frequently see regional fishermen walking house after a day at sea, as well as guy bring machetes. This may seem bizarre as well as a bit frightening to some, however the machete (or “cutlass” as the English-speaking Caribbean countries phone call it) is the tool of option right here in Grenada. They chop down tree branches, clean as well as jungle to make paths, as well as fracture open coconuts with two swift swings.

There’s a term in Grenada called “liming”, which is generally the art of doing nothing! You can’t lime alone though, so you’re only genuinely liming if surrounded by friends. regional rum shacks are prominent liming hangouts, as are untouristed beaches as well as the front porches of colourful homes.

We like feeling like we’re really in the Caribbean as well as not in a built-up vacationer trap.

Aktivitetene

Even though lazing on the beach is relaxing, it can get tiring after a while. When household pertained to go to us in August, we had a big listing of sights as well as things to perform in Grenada for them to select from. They were right here for two weeks, however could’ve stayed for a month as well as sTill hadde ting delegert se så vel som.
